What's
Hot on eBay? What are the Top Selling Items? -Top
This is something we all want to
know!
If you
are looking for items to sell on eBay then this is where you need to start.
You need to know what type items are selling!
Knowledge
is power, they say, and it couldn’t be truer than when it comes to selling
on eBay. Without a doubt, being a successful seller translates into being at
the right place, at the right time, with the right products. Using the right
tools to help you determine the best selling items on eBay is very important
because you don't make money when you over spend on products
that you are wanting to sell on eBay. Sometimes it is hard to really get
accurate average selling prices on an item when you are researching eBay
completed items.
How do you
figure out what will be a hot seller on eBay? It's a challenge for new sellers.
"They're hopped up to sell, but don't know what to sell," says Jim
"Griff" Griffith, dean of eBay Education. In fact, "What should
I sell on eBay?" is the most common question new sellers have, says Todd
Lutwak, eBay's director of seller development. Bellow resources will help you
to find our what most of the people are looking for on eBay, and you can target
on those products or services to increase your eBay sale enormously.
What's
Hot? Ok, are you ready for this?
Below are the Top Selling Categories, where
demand is greater than supply. These are the products and categories where the
marketplace is short of quality and quantity. This is great data to consider
when determining your next inventory purchase. Next to each category name you can find the links (In Demand) to the Best
Sellingsub-categories or items ("Top 10 Picks"
& "Top Buyer's Searches") for that corresponding category.
This is a
great data for sellers. By looking at the "Top 10 Picks",
"Top Buyer's Searches" & the keywords,
you know what's selling.
Current Hot Items by Category (PDF file)
Get insight on categories where demand for items has been outpacing
supply in recent weeks. Check back often as this PDF file is updated
frequently.
One of the most exciting things
about selling on eBay is that merchandise that will sell for a profit is virtually
everywhere!
Your home. Start
by looking around your own home at the stuff that's collecting dust on shelves
or stashed in the back of closets, or in the attic or garage.
Flea markets.
Flea markets can be a tremendous source of bargain-priced merchandise that
will sell on eBay.
Garage and yard sales.
Savvy eBay sellers can make a comfortable living spending one or two days
a week shopping garage sales for items that will fetch many times what they
cost when auctioned on eBay.
Here are Twelve Tips to help you buy right at garage sales.
1)Go! Go regularly, go to lots of places.
This is a numbers game. You need to be buying week-in, week-out to get
the inventory you need, and to snag those really great buys. Garage sale
“inventory” has a very short life span on the day of the sale,
as in a few hours at most. Remember to keep moving to the next and the
next and the next garage sale. As soon as you know the one you’re
at is a time-waster, go onto the next one. The more good sales you hit
on a Saturday morning, the more good stuff you’ll find. 2) Early bird gets the…best stuff.
Garage sales are competitive. So get up and at ‘em early. First
come, first served and good items go fast. But be respectful, too. Instead
of waking people up too early (like 6 am!), show up 15 minutes before
the advertised time. 3) Small cash is king. You can buy faster and better
if you have tons of small bills and change. Your wallet ought to look
like this when you head out:
$1 bills=20 $5 bills=10 $10 bills=10 $20 bills=10 $50 bills=5 Total:=$62
4) Ask for more. Sometimes, people holding garage sales
have items they couldn’t get at, or forgot to put out. Jog their
memory - ask if they have anything else for sale. I watched someone do
just that once. They walked off with a leather sofa, a matching entertainment
center and étagère, and two framed prints for pennies on
the dollar. Too big to get out the back door – but easily bought
right in the living room and carried out the front door. Lesson learned.
5) Take notes. Sounds simple and it is. Here are notes
to make to help buy better and smarter.
a) Get the seller’s name and number when your offer is refused.
Call back to see if it sold or not. Many times Lady Luck will let you
can scoop it up after the crowds are gone.
b) Network. Jot down the names of people you meet who are on the prowl
for special items. Share with them what you are looking for. And when
you find something they want, call and let them know. You’ll slowly
build a top-quality referral network.c) Write down items you think are
good but not sure about. Check around later and find out if it is good
(and call the seller back and see if it’s still for sale.) Then
the next one you see becomes a “must buy”. 6) Dress for success. Fancy duds (and cars) work against
you when bargaining. Don’t dress like a bum, either. You want to
be seen as a middle class, clean, acceptable and polite person. Dress
accordingly and remember to check the weather forcast! 7) Make an offer! Don’t hesitate to make an offer
on an item – it’s why you are there! No need to whip out your
cash and pay “sticker” price. Better still, put a group of
things you want together and make an offer. 8) But don’t haggle on a good deal. The idea is
not to beat the seller into the ground. It’s to get merchandise
at a low price that you can sell at a much higher price. So when you see
a good item fairly priced, just buy it. Trying to bargain the price down
could put it right into the hands of the smarter guy behind you. 9) Be respectful. Wait until the person before you has
finished with his negotiations or questioning. Be courteous to the other
people there. Treat the seller the way you would like to be treated. And
above all, do not take things away from others. A good reputation takes
a long time to build. A bad one can be created in an instant.
10) Get a grip on what you want. When you find a bargain,
PICK IT UP and carry it around with you. And don’t let go until
you are counting out the money to buy it. Otherwise, by the time you get
back to it, it could easily – and most likely will be – in
the hands of a happy buyer.
11) Take what you can. Sometimes you’ll buy something
that you can’t take with you right away. So take a part of it –
drawers from a dresser, chairs from a dining set – anything that
will make it impossible for someone else to buy it before you can get
back to pick it up. And make sure you get the name, phone number and address
of the seller. It’s easy to forget such critical info when hitting
a number of sales in a given day.
12) Pull the trigger. You’ll come across items
that you cannot make up your mind about. Should I, shouldn’t I.
Maybe, maybe not. If you think you can make a profit, just buy it. It’s
not often you’ll regret buying, but there will be many times where
you play the “woulda, shoulda, coulda” game. Establish a risk
$$ limit and stick to it – then make the buy.
Estate sales.
If a professional is already handling the estate sale, you're not as likely
to get really great bargains. But if you have access to a truck and storage,
you can advertise that you can buy entire estates. When you make such a purchase,
select what will sell best on eBay, put those items up for auction, and then
sell the rest through other channels.
Established retailers.
Stores need a way to move items that aren't selling. Once Gotham City Online,
a eBay company that focuses on clothing and accessories with sales exceeding
$1 million annually, was established, co-founder Jonathan Garriss was able
to approach retailers and offer to help them solve their overstock problems
by selling those items on a consignment basis on eBay. Eventually, he began
purchasing that inventory outright.
Discount stores.
Look for clearance items at discount department and drug stores. Cindy Mayer
of Cindy's Collectibles routinely buys infant's and children's items at the
end of the season and stores them until the following year. "I buy out
of season, and I have found great sales in drugstores," she says.
Friends and family.
Tell people you know not to throw anything away. Laurie Ayers says that members
of her church will give thing they are going to throw away or donate to charity,
and if she can sell them on eBay, she does.
Buying From Wholesalers.
As your business grows, you may choose to start buying from wholesale sources
and selling on eBay at retail. This can be very profitable, but only if you
choose the wholesaler wisely. One
of the website where your can find wholesalers is Alibaba.com.
Alibaba.com's wholesale search service connects you with sellers mostly in
Asia, but other places as well. When you get to the Alibaba home page, click
on the link to Gold Suppliers. Unfortunately there are some suppliers listed
on Alibaba that can be less than reliable. Gold Suppliers, however, are pre-qualified
and have to pass a rigourous screening to be listed. Once on the Gold Suppliers
page, there is a search box where you can search only the Gold Suppliers.
Some Wholesalers your can also find from our "eBay Resources"
section (below- "Nationwide Wholesale
Marts").
Our company publishes the Internet’s
leading Directory of genuine wholesale “Drop Shippers”
* (wholesalers who ship products, one at
a time, directly to your customers; eliminating the need to stock inventory).
It's called The
Drop Ship Source Directory. We also publish the Internet's
Leading Directory of genuine Wholesale
Suppliers who will sell to you in small Bulk Quantities,
while still giving you larger Bulk Quantity prices. That's called The
Light Bulk Wholesale Directory. As a result of the information
we research and publish, we get questions all the time about what products
Home-based Internet Business owners should try to sell online.
A picture IS worth 1000 words. It’s old-fashioned,
but people still like to see things before they buy them. For successful eBay
selling, make sure any products you list on eBay are accompanied by professional
quality photographs.
Do your eBay research. When selling on eBay, before you
list a particular product, spend some time researching other similar products
on eBay and following the bidding process. This will help you gauge the interest
for your product and help you determine how much your product might be worth.
Learn all about shipping. Shipping is under the control
of the eBay seller, but some methods of shipping are better than others when
you're selling on eBay. You want to find the best method of shipping for your
product in terms of expense and reliability and then specify that shipping
method in your eBay listing. (And don’t forget to include the shipping
cost in your shipping information for potential buyers.)
Pay as much attention to the writing of your eBay listing as to
your picture. For selling on eBay, you need a powerful eBay listing.
And the trick to writing a strong eBay listing is to combine search engine
friendly phrasing with concrete details about the product in a way that will
entice people to bid on your product. Take the time to craft your eBay listing
just as you would any ad.
Offer a full slate of payment options, including credit cards.
The more payment options you, as an Ebay seller, offer prospective bidders,
the more bidders your product will attract and the more successful your selling
on eBay will be.
Focus on getting positive feedback first. Feedback really
matters when you're selling on eBay. If you have a consistent record of positive
feedback, prospective buyers will both bid more often and be willing to pay
higher prices. So you may want to hold back on placing higher priced products
until you have a successful track record as an eBay seller established.
eBay Search Tips. When searching here are a few general
tricks to keep in mind:
A simple search phrase: antique necklace returns auctions with antique
AND necklace anywhere in the title, and in any order - or in the description
- if you indicate for the engine to search descriptions as well as titles.
Using quotes, as in "antique necklace" will show every auction
with the exact phrase antique necklace in its title or description.
A search with an asterisk * (upshift of the number 8 key) acts as a
wild card. You want a necklace from the 1800s? Search 18** necklace.
Commas can be used without a space between the words, as in kennedy, nixon.
This search returns titles that mention either kennedy and/or nixon.
Parentheses can encase a search as in the quarters example above. A
search for (quarter, quarters) (roll, rolls) will give you every auction
for quarter rolls, roll of quarters, or rolls of quarters.
Not a search trick, but perhaps the most important thing to do on eBay:
check the seller's feedback before bidding on an item. eBay gives you
the tools to protect yourself - so be sure to do it!
The books, "eBay For Dummies" and "Starting an eBay Business"
are loaded with many more tips that can help you finesse the eBay search
engine so you can find exactly what you're looking for.
Ten
tips for successful trading on eBay. Ebay offers an extraordinary
opportunity to make money over the internet. Many, many people are making
a part time income from eBay and loads of people are full time eBayers. Following
tips will help you get the most out of this great trading opportunity
Learn a little HTML. Adverts written in HTML look so much better than
plain text ads. They give customers a little confidence that you know
what you are doing.
Never try to make a profit on postage. People know roughly what things
cost to send, and an over inflated postage charge will put people off.
Clear, polite email communication with customers helps build confidence
and repeat customers.
If you can have your auction pictures hosted by a web hosting company.
They are clearer and you will have more flexibility about where you place
them in your auction ads.
If you can, check your auction ads for spelling mistakes. Poor spelling
does not help at all.
Open up a PayPal account so that you can take credit/ debit cards. They
are fairly reliable and it is very convenient for customers.
The profit on eBay is made in the buying, not the selling. Buy as cheaply
as possible as margins on eBay are pretty tight.
When you have found an item you want to sell search for it on ebay (UK
and USA) to get an idea of how people are selling it and what sort of
prices they are getting. Use the 'Completed Items' button on the left
han side of the search results to see how much they have actually sold
for.
When pricing items take into account 1) what you paid for it, 2) all
eBay fees, 3) PayPal fees or merchant bank fees, 4) your time composing
the advert, photographing the item and wrapping it for postage. Its surprising
how much of your time/ profits are eaten up by these factors.
Remember - the customer is always right! (Even when they are wrong.)
9 eBay Beginners Selling Tips. There are many people making
a fortune from eBay and, if you want , you can get a slice of the action.
When you are starting out with eBay everything seems a little daunting. Perhaps
you have bought one or two items and perhaps bidded on a few others. However,
with a little help you can be selling like the pros. The clever people at
ebay have made the selling process really easy to learn and whether you want
to start selling goods on eBay for fun or for profit here are nine beginners
tips to get you started.
Spell check your writing - use your computer's spell
checker and ensure it is set to UK spellings.
PayPal - Register with PayPal (www.paypal.com) which
allows you to take credit and debit cards online.
Pictures - You will need to have a picture of your
goods for your eBay auction ads. A computer scanner will be OK for many
smaller items such as books, CDs and very small items. (However, take
care not to scratch the glass plate on your scanner!) In most cases a
digital camera will be necessary if you plan to sell anything larger than
a paperback.
PowerSellers - Have you come across them yet? Look
for 'PowerSellers' (they have the 'PowerSeller' logo next to their name.)
because they are the successful eBayers you want to learn from. They sell
££££s every day and are probably full time entrepreneurs.
You can learn loads from the auction ads of the best PowerSellers. Most
have been selling for years and their adverts show that. If you can't
find a power seller got to ebay Shops and look for the largest stores
- they are likely to be PowerSellers! Read/ analyse their auction ads
(but never copy!).
Product description - A clear detailed product description in your auction
ads is best. Describe everything you can about your item, including any
damage, or special features. If you know a little about the history of
the item you may want to include that, as well.
Auction title - make sure you have spelt your auction
title correctly as this is what eBay looks at when it searches for an
item. If there are variations in the name of the item you are selling
try to include both in your title i.e. 'Hitch Hikers' and 'Hitchhikers'
.
Communication - as you are communicating by email keep
your messages polite and respectful. Enquiries should be answered promptly
and you should take every opportunity to show that you are a decent seller.
Positive feedback - People will look at your feedback
record in the same way that you would look at sellers feedback records.
The more positive feedback you have, before you start selling, the better.
It best if you have bought / sold a few items in the past and have at
least some track record. Furthermore, make every effort not to get negative
feedback. In the early part of your selling career negative feedback can
be a great disadvantage.
Learn HTML - Auction ads formatted in HTML look better
than plain text ads. It is a simple fact that your auction ads will look
more attractive and you can expect more interest from potential customers,
than if you did not use HTML.
Be business-like. Act professionally, provide the kind
of superior customer service that will build your reputation, and make sure
that you’re following all the business rules that apply, such as registering
your business and properly charging and remitting taxes. Selling on eBay is
just like any other business; to become an eBay success, you need to follow
the rules and provide the kind of customer satisfaction that will translate
into increased eBay sales.
Spelling success with good grammar. Nothing turns off a
prospective buyer more than a listing with lousy spelling, sloppy grammar,
and pitiful punctuation. You don't need to have a description that will make
an English teacher proud; your listing just needs to make it appear that you
can speak the language. People aren't usually comfortable spending their hard-earned
money with someone who appears barely able to communicate. Write your descriptions
first in a word processor, and then run the grammar and spell checker. The
process takes only a minute or so and may earn you mega dollars by knot uzing
the wrong wurds.
Captivating buyers with delightful descriptions. Now you
get to the meat of the auction. It's time to pull out all the adverbs and
adjectives that you can muster. Think excitement! Think infomercial! Use words
that will make the prospective buyer excited about buying your item. No, don't
use the most overused words on eBay: "rare", "hard-to-find,"
and the others. Use those words only if they really apply to your item.
If the item is
Out-of-print, use the abbreviation OOP
New but has been sitting around for a while, use NOS (for new, old stock).
In mint condition, say so!
Click our "eBay Abbreviations
Terms " secton for a longer list of these widely
used online sales abbreviations.
Always ask yourself, "What would you like to know about the item?"
If your item isn't new, be sure to list any flaws (if there are any). Let
the buyer know how long you've had it. Is it still in the original box? Has
it been used only a few times? Does it look as if it's traveled across the
country on a wagon train — but hey, it is 100 years old? Is your item
truly hard to find? What sets it apart from the hundreds of others that are
up for sale?
This is the time to let the buyer know what sets your item above the others,
even if it's only a low starting bid!
Gallery Photos. eBay's Gallery upgrade
places a photo next to your item in search results and category listings.
All that's required (aside from the small fee) is that you provide a Gallery
photo. When your listing goes live, eBay automatically processes the photo
by performing the following tasks:
The image file is converted to the JPEG file format.
The photo is resized so that the larger dimension is 96 pixels.
The photo is padded with white space to make it a square 96x96 pixels.
The image file is hosted on eBay's server, making it accessible at http://thumbs.ebay.com/pict/3135403486.jpg,
where 3135403486 is the item number.
The closer your photo is to the final size of 96x96, the less
of a hatchet job eBay's servers will have to do, and the better your Gallery
photo will look. The best auction photo will not necessarily be the best
Gallery photo, so you'll most likely want to prepare two different images. For
starters, your Gallery photo must be square and without any superfluous
background or borders. Figure 1 shows a few examples of Gallery photos,
both good and bad.The easiest way to create a good square image is to use
the rectangular selection tool of your image-editor software and specify
a 1:1 aspect ratio. Then simply draw a box around your image, and the software
will automatically impose a square shape.
Selling as a "lot". One of the most common mistakes
sellers make on eBay is selling too many things together as a "lot."
Sure, it's easier to list fewer auctions, but bundles are usually worth much
less than the same items sold separately and may even be less likely to sell.
So instead, just ask yourself this question: How likely is it that any single
bidder will want all of the items I'm selling? Bidders who buy large collections
or lots typically do so with the intention of reselling some or all of the
items. Since they'd do this only if there were profit in it, it's unlikely
that anyone would pay the full value of such a collection.
Never bundle unrelated or incompatible items. For instance,
say you'd like to sell two camera lenses, each for a different brand of camera.
It should be obvious that they should be sold separately, but even experienced
sellers sometimes try to sell odd things such as these together. In this case,
anyone who bids will likely be interested in only one of the lenses and, as
a result, won't bid higher than what that single lens is worth.
Listing an item at the wrong time. It’s a proven
fact more buyers browse Internet auction sites on Sunday evenings than any
other time during the week. If your auction is scheduled to end at any other
time than Sunday evenings (specifically between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern
time), you’re not getting the maximum exposure for your auction at a
time when people are most eager to buy.
Using a reserve. Using a reserve to guarantee that you’ll
get a minimum price for an item will absolutely kill your auction. Trust me,
I’ve seen it happen too many times to not accept this as a given. In
fact, I often use other seller’s auctions that have a reserve as a way
to pick up items at ridiculously low prices that I can sell "the right
way" for a huge profit a few days later -- but that’s a different
article altogether. For now, just realize that nothing scares away potential
bidders better than seeing the "Reserve Not Yet Met" tag. If you’re
truly concerned about a minimum price, simply set your starting price a little
higher.
Excessive shipping fees. If your quoted shipping price
is higher than those of your competitors', you will lose out to them. Most
seasoned sellers prefer to raise the initial price of the item and offer competitive
shipping costs.
Lack of descriptive text. A photo alone will not sell your
item. You also need a concise, but complete, description of the item. Try
to put yourself in the position of your potential purchasers, and craft the
copy in terms of the features and benefits of the item you are selling. Your
text must impress a jaded buyer, who may be looking at an entire page of similar
items.
Too much text. Try to completely describe the item in a
few sentences, and don’t write a novel. When it comes to effective copywriting,
it is quality -- not quantity -- that counts. Read your competitors' listings
and try to differentiate your item.
Poor layout. Internet readers are used to seeing concise
material down the center of the page. Long tedious paragraphs are not as reader
friendly as short independent sentences with some space between the lines.
Typing in all caps does not help you sell, and will likely hurt. Stay away
from "cute" animated images that can junk up your listing. Consumers
shopping for items have no time or need for anything of that nature.
Bad photos. A bad photo can actually be worse than no photo
at all. When you photograph your item, be sure to light it properly, and include
as many photos as possible to convey the appearance of your item. To read
more, see Photography Tips for eBay Sellers.
Not thinking internationally. By offering your items to
overseas bidders, you can dramatically increase your base of potential buyers.
And in an auction model, more bidders generally means more profit. Remember,
eBay is global.
Listing in the wrong category. Most people shop by category.
Therefore, a poor choice of category can make it much more difficult to sell
your product. If you cannot decide on a single category for your item, or
if it is equally at home in two different places, pay a little extra and list
it in both places.
Jumping on the bandwagon. Unless the bandwagon is heading
to a goldmine, stay off it. Try to diversify yourself from the many listings
for the same objects. If 25 people are selling a clock similar to one you
have, wait and sell the clock when there are less similar items being auctioned
off.
Setting a price too high or too low. If your asking price
is too high, you are wasting valuable time and money. Likewise, if your price
is too low, you could be leaving money on the table. Do some basic market
research, and get a good idea what comparable items sell for.
Poor timing. Many items sell year-round -- but not all.
If you have something seasonal to sell, such as holiday-related items or anything
that can sell more effectively at a particular time of year, be patient and
post it in the months leading up to that particular season or holiday.
Using "Las Vegas style" listings. I’m sure
you know what I’m talking about here. A Las Vegas listing is one that
uses all kinds of flashing animation, multicolored text and other bells and
whistles in an attempt to entice bidders. In fact, it does just the opposite.
Listings like these are distracting, hard to read, and will always discourage
people from bidding, resulting in a lower final sales price. The descriptions
that you give of your item on your sales page ARE NOT designed to get a buyer’s
attention (you already have that if they’ve clicked on your listing
in the first place). They should be designed to get someone to actually place
a bid.
Grammar Mistakes. Nothing turns off a prospective buyer
more than a listing with lousy spelling, sloppy grammar, and pitiful punctuation.
You don't need to have a description that will make an English teacher proud;
your listing just needs to make it appear that you can speak the language.
People aren't usually comfortable spending their hard-earned money with someone
who appears barely able to communicate. Write your descriptions first in a
word processor, and then run the grammar and spell checker. The process takes
only a minute or so and may earn you mega dollars by knot uzing the wrong
wurds.
The Biggest Mistakes.Sell What Sells,
NOT What's 'Cool'
Selling only products they like.
Selling only products they know a lot about.
Selling only products they think are “Cool” or “Sexy”.
Selling only products they think “The Hottest Products on the
Internet”
Posting without shipping costs. A posting on eBay without
shipping costs is a listing that may not get very many bids. Savvy eBay shoppers
are cautious about overspending on shipping. Many sellers begin their items
with a low starting bid (or a low, buy-it-now price) and make up their profits
with an outrageous shipping amount. Set aside a certain amount of money for
handling costs, which cover expenses for tape, packing material, envelopes,
and boxes. Handling costs also need to cover any monthly fees you pay to your
shipping or postal service — as well as the cost of occasionally paying
someone to bring your boxes to the post office or local service counter. Keep
your handling costs reasonable, but don't forget them.
Let the reader know what forms of payment you accept — remember that
accepting credit cards through an online service such as PayPal will definitely
help you attract more bids. Also, it never hurts to reiterate whether you
will ship out of the country or not — standing in line at the post
office with international shipments may require charging a higher handling
fee.
Do not, under any circumstances, allow your "Terms & Conditions"
area to be larger than the description of your item. You want your customer
to feel that you have a friendly business, but if you barrage them with
negatives at the get-go, they may not be very comfortable spending money
with you.
All in all, writing a quality description that sells reflects the golden
rule: Treat your prospective buyers the way you'd like to be treated. Make
your descriptions interesting and informative, and most of all, sincere.
Don't forget to put together your own eBay "About Me" page, as
well. That way, you can communicate further with your buyers by telling
them about your business and supplying them with your Web site URL if you
have one.
